The Macquarie Dictionary defines Aluminium as a silver-white metallic element, light in weight, ductile (that is, capable of being hammered out thin, and able to stand deformation under a load without fracture), malleable (that is, capable of being extended or shaped by hammering or by pressure with rollers) and not readily oxidised or tarnished. It occurs combined in nature in igneous rocks, shales, clays, and most soils. It is widely used in alloys and for lightweight utensils, castings, aeroplane parts, etc.

    Adelaide Art Fence Project

The Adelaide Showground Art Fence designed by Richard Tipping has been installed. Commissioned by the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia this 110 metre-long fence is made of die-cast aluminium pickets welded onto curved aluminium rails, and swerves its way along the footpath in a series of S-curves.

For a temporary public artwork, it’s hard to beat using grass if you really mean temporary! In 2008 Richard was commissioned by Frankston City Council (near Melbourne) come up with an idea for their White Street series of art projects. His solution was big, cheap and very green.
